Girl Scouts Nature Hike

In collaboration with: DC Rocks

We had a great time taking one of DC’s Girl Scout Brownies troops out for a nature and geology hike in Rock Creek Park as part of their Hiking Badge experience! Rock Creek has an extensive geological and natural history, and the girls were excited to locate different types of rocks, find animal tracks, and climb on everything in sight. Once particularly good specimen was a large outcrop of metamorhposed basement rock (gneiss), that was embedded with large garnets. The girls climbed all over that, too!

The Association for Women Geoscientists (AWG) is an internationally renowned non-profit organization that encourages the participation of women in earth science. Our DMV chapter is focused on connecting generations, encouraging diversity, empowering student/early-career geologists, and educating the public. Both women and men are welcome to join us and become part of DC’s experienced, diverse geological community.
